Digital versus Offset Printing
The phenomenal developments in digital print technologies have allowed for its substantial growth in the print industry. How does one decipher which method it the best for a given project? To aid in the the decision-making process, here is a helpful comparison:
Not all digital print is created equal. A production digital print press utilizes an outboard RIP system to better control the final print output. Our presses utilize 2400×2400 DPI, which is 16 times greater than most office digital printers which only utilize 600×600 DPI.
[+] Variable Data Printing VDP allows multiple ways of customizing marketing material to better reach and react to your target market.
[+] Just-in-time inventory can be more easily managed.
[+] Every print is the same.
[+] Less expensive for low volume printing. Without the expensive costs of manufacturing print plates for each colour, digital printing has a significantly lower setup cost.
[+] Quick turnaround time of usually less than 48 hours.
[+] Offers the best colour proof as you are able to see an actual sample of the printed piece.
[−] More limited paper selection.
[−] Smaller paper sizes.
Offset printing is a common print technique that a print is created by the transfer of ink from a plate to a rubber blanket, then onto the print surface.
[+] Consistently high image quality.
[+] Less expensive for high volume printing; as the quantity goes up, the cost per unit goes down.
[+] Ability to print single colour prints which is a cost effective solution.
[+] Best colour matching on Pantone Colours as offset presses can use Pantone inks though this does generally increase the cost.
[−] Longer turnaround time due to need of creating a plate for each separate colour and proofing.
[−] High cost of initial setup.
[−] Accurate colour proofing is both time consuming and expensive.
Gang-run printing is uses offset print technology but in an effort to reduce costs and pater wastage by combining multiple print projects on a common paper sheet. Gang-run printing is usually associated with full-colour CMYK process jobs unlike traditional offset printing in which a colour or group of colours can be assigned to a particular project.
[+] High image quality.
[+] Inexpensive due to cost sharing of labour and print plates.
[+] Less paper waste than sheet offset printing.
[−] Lack of colour control due to multiple print projects being subject to one colour calibration.
[−] Limited paper stock choices as the paper must be common to the multiple print projects.
[−] Proofing is difficult and thus most print companies are only able to provide digital print proofs which will not be exactly like the final print.
[−] Long turnaround time of 5-7 business days after proofing.
